The Daughter
I could never forget a touching story that happened to my family one day. I have a daughter who is on her first year in college . During her high school I could see changes not only in her body, her preferences but also in the manner of clothing. I grew up in the countryside and women are supposed to dress up conservatively to gain respect from men. My daughter is always wearing black. Black skirt, black jeans, black blouses, black shoes and worst black make up. How could any one wear black lipstick with a black blush on. My husband often tells me to let her be what she wants to be as long as she gives us good grades. A compromise was made, she can wear anything she likes as long as she gives us no less than an A. It was a deal. One Monday morning, my husband and I both work in the same company and my daughter’s school is on our way so we drop her off everyday, my husband and I were waiting in the car, I was a little bit annoyed at the loud speaker in her room at the wee hour of the morning. I complained it to my husband but he just told me to let her be. After almost half an hour she stepped out and she looked every bit a voodoo doll. All black from head to toe and smear of black make up all over her face. I didn’t able to control my temper, I scolded her and told her she should act her age.
She remained silent, back in my mind I know I was bypassing an agreement, that I should let her be as long as she gives us an A. I wanted to apologized but I stayed quiet. My husband parked in front of the school and my child slowly stepped out of the car. I remained motionless. When my husband was about to drive the car away, our daughter came to the passenger side and gave me two envelopes. And she smiled as she walked away. In the first envelope were class cards, all A+ and in the second envelope was a black card with white encrypting that says,” I love you Mom and Dad, more than anything in this world.”
